Cicadas are said to be the souls of people who were overwhelmed by the song of the muses and became lost in the act of creation– neglecting food or rest until they wasted away. They were rewarded by the gods with new bodies that needed neither rest nor food, only song. Are those of us living for our art also dying for it? Can we hope to be reborn or will our art need to live for us? This ‘hatching cicada’ is dedicated to the artists who listened to their muse, but were taken from us far too soon.
