Devil's Darning Needle

Mild Steel, Mirror, Copper Wire 2020

In Appalachia dragonflies are sometimes called devil’s darning needles. Children were often told that if they told a lie, one would come in the night and sew their mouth shut. I have struggled with anorexia and body dysmorphia since I was a child, and the biggest lie I have ever faced is my reflection. I am not what I see in the mirror, and my appearance has nothing to do with who I truly am. Here the devil’s darning needle is sewing shut the lie of my reflection and flying away.
